   TBMs are the most advanced and widely used tools for large-scale tunnel projects. These massive, cylindrical machines excavate soil or rock while simultaneously installing precast concrete segments to line the tunnel walls. They are highly efficient in stable ground conditions and minimize surface disruption. Examples include:

   ① Earth Pressure Balance Machines (EPBMs): Ideal for soft soils.

   ② Hard Rock TBMs: Designed for granite, basalt, or other dense rock formations.

   2. Drill-and-Blast Method

   This traditional method uses drilling rigs to create boreholes for explosives. After blasting, excavators and dump trucks remove debris. It’s cost-effective for irregularly shaped tunnels or hard rock environments where TBMs are impractical.

  3. Roadheaders

   These tracked machines with rotating cutter heads are used in softer rock or coal mines. They combine drilling and cutting functions, making them flexible for smaller tunnels or complex geometries.

   A subtype of TBMs equipped with pressurized shields to stabilize unstable ground (e.g., underwater tunnels). They prevent collapses and water ingress during excavation.
